Invader Defense pays tribute to the 1978 shooter that launched the golden age of arcades, then rebuilds it for modern browsers with real attitude. The familiar heart of the game is intact — formations of aliens descend toward your cannon while you weave beneath their fire — but here the invaders behave like individuals. Red aliens march down in sweeping arcs, yellow ones zigzag, magenta tanks shrug off three hits, and orange shooters fire back on the way down. Waves grow taller and meaner every level, downed enemies sometimes release power-ups such as rapid fire, spread shot, a shield bubble, and a piercing laser, and every third level ends in a boss battle against a hovering fortress. It all glows with a neon CRT aesthetic and synthesized retro sound.
Move your cannon left and right with the arrow keys and hold Space to fire. Enemies stream down from the top of the screen in colour-coded formations, and each colour behaves differently, so learn which types to pick off first as they descend. Clear a wave to advance a level; each wave is taller, faster, and mixes in tougher aliens. Shooting enemies sometimes releases a falling power-up, so fly underneath to collect rapid fire, a spread shot, a protective shield, or a piercing laser. Every third level clears the board to make way for a boss: dodge its bullet spreads and laser bursts, swat away the minions it spawns, and wear down its health bar with concentrated fire. You have three lives, P pauses the action, and M mutes the sound.
Boss battles arrive automatically every third level. Once you clear wave three — then six, nine, and so on — a large hovering fortress drops in with its own health bar and three attacks: a spread of bullets, squads of spawned minions, and a rapid laser burst.
Each colour has its own behaviour: red aliens march downward in gentle arcs, yellow ones zigzag side to side, magenta tanks are slow but absorb three hits, and orange shooters fire bullets at you while descending. Clearing the shooters first keeps the screen safe.
The shield wraps your cannon in a glowing bubble for about twenty seconds. While it is active, enemy bullets that would normally cost a life instead chip away at the shield's timer, giving you a valuable window of protection to keep firing uninterrupted.
