About Hangman

Hangman is one of the most enduring word games ever played — a pencil-and-paper staple that has challenged vocabularies for over a century and found new life as a classroom classic and a digital favourite. One player thinks of a word and draws a blank for every letter; the other guesses letters one at a time. Every correct guess fills in its blanks; every wrong guess adds another piece to the gallows. The game ends when the word is complete or the hangman is. This version brings the classic to your browser with six themed word categories, a clean on-screen keyboard, full keyboard support, and win-streak tracking.

How to Play Hangman

Pick a category or play a random word. A row of blanks shows the length of the hidden word. Guess letters by typing them on your keyboard or clicking the on-screen keys. Each correct letter is revealed in every position where it appears. Each wrong guess draws one more part of the hangman — you get six wrong guesses before the game ends. If you reveal the whole word first, you win and your streak grows. If the hangman is completed first, the word is revealed and your streak resets. Use common vowels and high-frequency consonants early to maximize your chances.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many wrong guesses do I get?

Six. Each incorrect letter adds one part to the hangman — head, body, two arms, and two legs. Reveal the word before all six parts appear and you win.

What word categories are available?

Six themed lists: animals, food, geography, science, sports, and movies. Each list holds a generous set of words ranging from short warm-ups to real tongue-twisters.

Is Hangman good for learning vocabulary?

Absolutely. Guessing letters forces you to think about English letter frequencies, common letter patterns, and word structure — a light, fun way to reinforce spelling and phonics for children and language learners alike.
