Mahjong Solitaire

Clear the board by matching identical tiles that are free — a tile is free when no tile sits on top of it and at least one of its sides is open. Plan your matches carefully: remove the wrong pair and the board can become unwinnable.

Click a free tile, then click its matching pair. Undo and Shuffle are your friends.

About Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is the single-player tile-matching puzzle that took the world by storm when it was bundled with Windows in the 1990s. A set of 144 mahjong tiles is stacked into an intricate layered pattern, and your goal is to clear the board by removing identical pairs. But you cannot just take any two matching tiles — a tile can only be removed when it is "free": nothing may sit on top of it, and at least one of its left or right sides must be open. The game ends when every tile is matched. Despite its simple rules, choosing which pairs to remove first is a genuine puzzle of foresight — clear the wrong tiles and you can deadlock the entire board.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Click a free tile to select it — the game highlights legal tiles you can pick. Then click a second tile that is also free and belongs to the same family to match and remove the pair. Suit and honor tiles pair only with their exact match, while any flower pairs with any flower and any season with any season. If you remove the wrong pair, use Undo to step back. If you run out of obvious matches, Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles into new free positions. A Hint button points out a matching pair when you are stuck. Clear all 144 tiles to win, and try to beat your best score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "free" mean for a Mahjong tile?

A tile is free when no other tile is stacked on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is completely open (not covered by a neighbouring tile). Only free tiles can be selected for matching.

Is every Mahjong Solitaire layout winnable?

No. Even with perfect play, some random tile placements cannot be fully cleared. That is why the Shuffle button exists — it re-randomizes the remaining tiles and can turn a dead board into a winnable one.

What are the different tile types?

The set has three numbered suits — bamboo, characters, and dots (each 1 through 9, four copies each) — plus honor tiles: four winds, three dragons, and the flower and season tiles. Suit tiles pair only with their exact match, while any flower pairs with any flower and any season with any season.
