2048 is the sliding-tile puzzle that exploded from a single web page into a global obsession. You push numbered tiles around a small 4x4 board, and whenever two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one with double the value. Chain those merges and you climb the powers of two, but the real goal is deceptively simple: build a tile worth 2048. Luck plays a part, because every move drops a fresh tile onto the board. Skill decides far more, since careful planning keeps the grid open and the merges flowing.
Use the arrow keys, the WASD keys, or a swipe on a touch screen to shift every tile on the board in one direction at the same time. Tiles slide until they hit an edge or another tile, and two tiles with the same number fuse into their sum, so a pair of 8s becomes a single 16. Each move also spawns a new tile, usually a 2 and occasionally a 4, in a random empty square. Keep stacking merges and your score climbs with every combination. The round ends when all 16 squares are filled and no move can merge anything. When that happens, restart and try again. A built-in undo button takes back a bad move, and your best score is worth chasing until the 2048 tile finally appears.
Every valid move spawns a fresh tile, usually a 2 and sometimes a 4, in a random empty cell. That is what makes the board fill up over time. It is also why you cannot plan too far ahead: each spawn can reshape the grid, so keep open space wherever you can.
Both. The positions of new tiles are random, but your choice of move controls how much danger they create. A disciplined corner strategy keeps your largest tile safe and wins far more often than luck alone, which is why skilled players reach 2048 on a regular basis.
Yes. A dedicated undo button lets you step back from a mistaken swipe, which is perfect when you bump the wrong arrow key. The undo does not erase your score, and every game still ends when the board is full and no merges remain.
